Ghana to Launch Open University in 2024, Revolutionizing Access to Education

Dr. Yaw Adutwum, the Education Minister, announced at the National Education Week held in Accra that Ghana will open an Open University from the start of next year, 2024. The five-day event, which brought together scholars from both academia and the corporate world to exchange ideas on innovative approaches to Ghana's education service, aimed to promote accessibility to quality education for school-going children across all social classes.

The Minister highlighted the government's efforts to redesign the education sector by establishing gender equity in school enrolment and abolishing the existing education structures and curriculum development. The promotion of STEM education and the revival of TVET with access to modern facilities to develop innovative solutions to problems were among the topics discussed during the week. Dr. Adutwum also mentioned that Ghana's Open University would enable students and mentors to interact remotely via electronic means.

Students will require internet connectivity to attend classes exclusively, making the Open University a more advanced model than distance education. Open University is defined as a no-classroom education system, whereby students can study from anywhere remotely and have no physical classrooms.
